Deciding fixture positions while the trench is still open and the wall is still courses of block. Sleeves get run under paving to reach the far side of a patio. Cap and step lights get set into masonry as it goes up.
Transformer locations get chosen with the electrician who is already on site. None of that is exotic work. It is simply work that is cheap on a Tuesday in build week and expensive in October.
What Has to Be Worked Around on a Retrofit?
Finished surfaces, mostly. Getting power across a paver field after the fact means either cutting the field or routing the long way through beds, which limits where a fixture can sit.
Integrated lighting is harder still, since a seat wall built without conduit cannot take a cap light without opening the cap course. Retrofits are entirely doable and we do plenty, but the design is constrained by the build rather than the other way around.

Humidity and canopy. Brass and copper housings hold up here in a way cheaper finishes do not, and our summer growth means a fixture aimed perfectly in March is aimed into a shrub by July.
We set fixtures with room to re-aim and we leave slack in the wire, because the planting will move even when the stone does not.
